Reading Coaches For Kids Program Hosts "Reading & Roses" Celebrating 10 Years Of Helping Children Learn To Read

EVENT CHANGES LOCATION!

Due to the unexpected death of Jan Wos, owner of Mayflower Greenhouse, the “Reading and Roses” event scheduled for this Friday, May 13th has been moved to the Green Bay Botanical Garden (2600 Larsen Road, Green Bay).  The event is a celebration of the impact that the Reading Coaches for Kids Program has had through mobilizing hundreds of tutors in area schools.

“We are so saddened by Jan’s passing,” said Anne Charneski, coordinator of the Reading Coaches for Kids program.  “We are changing venues at the request of Jan’s survivors, and are deeply grateful to the Green Bay Botanical Garden for hosting us on such short notice.”

“Reading and Roses” will feature wine and cheese tasting, chocolate samples, non-alcoholic beverages, live harp, raffles, planting demonstrations, and more.

Reading Coaches for Kids is the only volunteer-driven literacy program which focuses on the needs of children. It is currently serving 16 elementary schools within the Green Bay School District. The program works with children who have been identified as struggling with their literacy skills. Volunteer tutors, or “Coaches,” receive training, orientation, and support from Volunteer Center staff. They work directly in the schools, partnering with the classroom teachers. These dedicated, caring volunteers help students increase their reading level through individual attention, instruction, and encouragement. “Reading Coaches” thus helps fill a social need as well as an educational void in our community.

The event will be honoring Reading Coaches volunteers and is also an opportunity for community members to learn more about Reading Coaches for Kids, support the program, and enjoy the evening of live harp music and various refreshments.

“School budgets have become so tight and the cuts that are being made in education are very deep,” commented Anne Charneski, coordinator of  Reading Coaches for Kids. “The services provided by Reading Coaches are essential, and we’re hoping that the community will support this program by taking part in this beautiful event.”

Tickets can be purchased for $20 by contacting the Volunteer Center at 920-429-9445 or acharneski@volunteergb.org.
